Victim loses almost $28,000 in AI romance scam

A man from Shanghai, China, has reported losing nearly $28,000 after falling victim to a sophisticated AI romance scam, as detailed in a recent report from local authorities. Scammers utilized advanced generative AI technologies to create convincing videos and images of a fictitious young woman, referred to as 'Ms. Jiao.'

The victim became emotionally invested in this fake persona and subsequently transferred close to 200,000 yuan (approximately $28,000) to the 'woman’s' bank account. The fraudulent operation was further enhanced by the creation of a fake identity along with fabricated medical records. These false medical documents were strategically used to manipulate the victim into believing that the woman was in dire need of financial help.

While romance scams have been a persistent issue for some time, the integration of artificial intelligence has enabled scammers to deploy increasingly sophisticated tactics. According to a report released by a computer security firm, McAfee, on February 11, 2025, it was found that over half (52%) of individuals surveyed had either been scammed out of money or pressured into sending money or gifts by someone they encountered online.

AI's Role in Romance Scams

The report highlights a significant surge in online romance fraud, particularly through social media platforms, messaging apps, and AI chatbots. Approximately 26% of respondents stated that they or someone they knew had interacted with an AI chatbot that was masquerading as a real person on dating apps or social media platforms.

Furthermore, the study revealed that 21% of individuals had been contacted by someone impersonating a well-known public figure. Among those who fell for these scams, 33% reported financial losses, with an average loss of $1,985.

In the lead-up to Valentine’s Day, McAfee took action against the rising trend of romance scams by blocking 321,509 fraudulent URLs designed to ensnare victims.

Earlier this year, another alarming case emerged from France, where a woman was deceived out of €830,000 (approximately $850,000). She believed she was in a romantic relationship with Hollywood superstar Brad Pitt, demonstrating the extreme lengths to which these AI-driven scams can go.

As scams become more elaborate, the importance of public awareness cannot be overstated. Authorities are urging individuals to be vigilant when engaging with potential romantic partners online, especially when requests for money or personal information arise.

Conclusion

The incident involving the Shanghai man serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by AI-enhanced scams. With technology advancing rapidly, scammers are finding new ways to exploit people's emotions and trust. Staying informed and cautious when interacting online is crucial in protecting oneself from becoming the next victim of a romance scam.
